At its peak, more than 12 million people were playing World of Warcraft. It is the most popular MMORPG ever. Even though the number of players has gone down, there are still millions of people who log in every day to grind, finish missions, hunt for the best gear, and beat every PvE and PvP challenges that Blizzard can come up with.

But the game wasn’t always as popular as it is now. World of Warcraft has always been popular, but it didn’t start out that way. When the game came out, it didn’t look at all like it does now.

The only places that made up the world of Azeroth were Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Burning Crusade, the game’s first expansion, made the world bigger than it was when the game first came out. If you’ve ever been curious about which World of Warcraft expansions is the best, we’ve put them in order here.

Best World of Warcraft

1. Wrath Of The Lich King

Even though it is the second expansion in the World of Warcraft universe, Wrath of the Lich King is widely thought to be the best expansion ever added to the game. Not only did it introduce the continent of Northrend, but it also gave players Arthas Menethil, the former Crown Prince of Lordaeron who turned into a Lich, who is the smartest bad guy the series has ever seen.

Players were drawn to Wrath of the Lich King by its powerful cut scenes and the huge number of things to do in the game. This expansion was all about a single evil threat, the Lich King, and every small enemy a player faced was in some way linked to him. The story was at its strongest, but the gameplay had a lot to offer as well. With Wrath of the Lich King, players got to go on one of the most fun raids in WoW history: Ulduar.

2. Burning Crusade

Burning Crusade was the first expansion for World of Warcraft. It came out in 2007. He made a new continent called Outland, which had a lot of stories about it. Burning Crusade also added the Blood Elves to the Horde and the Draenei to the Alliance. This gave players new races to choose from and a lot of new areas to explore and take over.

Burning Crusade also let Horde players play as Paladins, which was a class that Alliance players could only play before. On the other hand, Alliance players could now play as Shamans thanks to the expansion. When these classes that were previously only for one side were added to the expansion, it made PvP a lot more interesting and gave the game a lot more replayability as players raced to become new classes up to the new level cap of 70 (it used to be 60).

World of Warcraft has always had an interesting story, but Burning Crusade has gotten a lot of attention from longtime players of Warcraft strategy games because it goes deeper into the complicated history of the series.

3. Cataclysm

Cataclysm was a kind of expansion that caused a lot of debate. All signs point to it being an epic event. The bad thing is that history has changed Azeroth in every way. Deathwing the Destroyer, a huge dragon, literally split the continents in half and changed the whole look of the world. This happened in places that used to be very popular.

Many experienced players couldn’t find their favorite spots (RIP, Crossroads). A lot of fans didn’t like this change, but no one can deny that Deathwing’s arrival made a big difference.

Cataclysm was World of Warcraft’s third expansion. It raised the level cap from 80 to 85. Many players thought there would be 10 levels instead of 5, so they got a lot of world achievements on the first night while power players tried to be the first to reach the new high.

Many players also didn’t like the changes to World of Warcraft’s talent system, but they set the tone for future expansions and gave the story team a lot to work with.

4. Legion

Given how the player base has reacted to them, it would be a bit of a stretch to call many after World of Warcraft expansions “controversial.” Many veteran players thought that the changes Blizzard made to the leveling systems made the game too easy and took away all of the challenges.

These players wanted to do the same thing over and over again in vanilla WoW, not race to the top in a new game. But that hasn’t stopped new people from loving Legion as much as the old fans do.

The 2016 expansion is one of the best because it added the Demon Hunter class, which had been missing for a long time. With this new class, there are new zones, a higher level cap, and artifact weapons that take time and work to evolve into their most powerful forms. Legion also had a big storyline that kept fans glued to their PCs for hours as they explored every part of the story.

These four World of Warcraft expansions are the best ones so far, but Blizzard still has a lot of room to make more. With the recent release of World of Warcraft Classic, which is a live-action version of the original level 1–60 gameplay, many players have come back to the world of Azeroth. Who can say? Maybe Blizzard could bring out Classic Burning Crusade just so people could fight over the Dark Portal again.
